Tamara Johnson

Is a native of Greenville, SC. She began dancing at the age of three, even participating in the SC Governor’s School for the Arts summer dance program before continuing her training at Duke University, where she was introduced to and fell in love with West African dance. After graduating with her BA in Psychology and a double minor in Dance and Women’s Studies, she moved to Philadelphia, where she worked as a research coordinator for the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Autism. She returned to South Carolina in 2006 to pursue her medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed her pediatric residency at Greenville Health System (now Prisma Health) in 2013. Tamara is now a practicing pediatrician in Spartanburg. Despite a lengthy break, she never lost her passion for dance. She is excited to be dancing again, grateful for the opportunity to combine her two great loves, and honored to be a member of Vaughn Newman Dance Company. This is Tamara’s third season with VND.
